SALON DES REFUSES – EDWARDS, MARSH, HARDAKER

271017-56

Noted artists Phil Hardaker, Nick Marsh and Andy Edwards begin a two-week exhibition on Friday 20th October 2017. The exhibition entitled “Salon Des Refusés” takes its name from the 1863 Parisian exhibition of work that had been rejected by the Paris Salon. The name reflects the frustration felt by many local artists at the British Ceramics Biennial’s seeming reluctance to help promote local talent.

As part of the exhibition artist Phil Hardaker has created the “Stoke-on-Trent City of Culture” hat. An impressive (and heavy!) stoneware hat that celebrates Stoke-on-Trent’s bid to become UK City of Culture 2021. Visitors are invited to try the hat on themselves, to take a selfie and to share their photographs on social media using the hashtag #sot2021.

The newly refurbished Spode Museum Trust Heritage Centre is open from 10am – 5pm on Tuesday to Saturday and 10:30 to 4pm on Sundays. Admission is free.

Manager, Michael Escolme says “We are delighted to host work by three such noted artists with strong local connections. The exhibition looks absolutely fantastic and I’m sure visitors will be enthralled by the collage work of Phil Hardaker; the beautiful ceramic art of Nick Marsh and to see the results of Andy Edwards’ collaborative project based on his.maquette of The Beatles. All three artists celebrate our rich ceramic heritage but in vibrant and exciting new ways – this exhibition is another good example of our city’s strong credentials to be awarded City of Culture 2021.”

For further information or to arrange a tour of the exhibition, please contact Michael Escolme, manager of the Spode Museum Trust Heritage Centre on 07905 346295 or email visitorcentre@spodeworks.org
